Ah, Week 1 of the NFL Season!! Can you smell it? I sure can. It’s somewhere between a freshly opened beer, a smokin’ grill full of beef and pigskin. For me this week is pretty easy. You have your choice of obvious picks. I’m in favor of the New Orleans over DET. However, BAL, NE, ARI and SEA seem to have fairly easy home games.
Archive for September, 2009I strive to have a game plan like the great ones. I even script out my intentions for the first 6 or 7 rounds and then I add contingencies in case of unexplained behavior my other owners. It seems that every year though, the owners in my 10 team league get better and smarter at drafting. This year was no different. Now, we have draft order that varies by round and snakes back so everyone’s average draft position for the entire draft is 5.5. So that adds to the some wrinkles into your planning. I had the following picks; 2, 19, 23, 38, 42, 59, 69, 72, 84, 97, 109, 112, 130, 131, 149, 152. The other caveats you should know about our league is that it has 6 pt TDs for QBs and all other positions, 2pt bonues for TDs over 50 yds., 3 pt bonuses for breaking 100 yds rushing/receiving and above 300 yds passing and half point for each reception. Overall, my game plan this year was to take a QB/TE later than I normally do. So in the first few rounds I wanted an elite RB and elite WR. I thought I could get Calvin Johnson sliding to me at 19. Lately in drafts he had been moving backwards (probably because Stafford has not been looking great). That wasn’t to be though. So after taking Forte at 2, I passed temptation on getting Manning and Westbrook (injury prone) and took the best remaining WR which was Reggie Wayne (over Jennings, White). I thought I could get White or Westbrook when I drafted again a few spots later but they were snatched in front of me. I’m headed to my draft tomorrow afternoon. I just thought I’d throw out a quick reminder to everyone in the same situation to keep these things in mind as you go into your draft day. 1. Tomorrow is cut down day where most teams are releasing 20 or so players. Every year there are some surprises. Keep an eye on Cleveland. I think Jamal Lewis is at risk. 2. Keep it simple. Don’t bring too much to the draft. Don’t be the guy with 3 magazines and a laptop. Pick one source and go with it. Else you run the risk of missing your pick or over-analyzing yourselg into picking up Kyle Orton for a good bye week. Oh yes, I’ve been there, done that. 3. Be confident in your analysis. If you want the guy, take the guy. If you reach a bit, especially for a top WR, don’t worry. 4. Don’t over indulge. It’s ok to drink to relax but it’s a little risky if you can’t read your notes. Same goes for the food. The stomach draws like 30% of the body’s blood when full. Well, that might be an exagerration. Sounded good though. 5. Have fun. It’ll be the one time that you get everyone together until the end of the season. Enjoy it. 6. If you don’t like your draft. Don’t worry. There’s still the waiver wire. I took a week off to get a baseball trip out of the way but I’m back to blog about another topic today. There are several old men to consider in this year’s draft. Well, ok, there only football old. Here’s a list of guys that have been in the league for at least ten years or are above the age of 34 that you might take in your draft. QBs WRs RB |
