The self-proclaimed “Talented Mr. Roto” can certainly rub you the wrong way in his fantasy articles by talking too much about himself but it’s also what sets him apart from the blah that dominates the fantasy world of writers.  The guy also had a horrible year of predictions in 2009.  Personally, I like his fact based articles and I push the rest aside.  He’s produced a nice piece that gets you thinking again this week titled “Just the facts, ma’am.”

Ah, the smell of BBQ and smoldering grass fires (from fireworks) must mean its getting close to July 4th here in the DFW area.  The US soccer team wowed us, the Rangers are making their usually push in June (followed by an August letdown) and Isner/Mahut went to 70-68 in an incredible first round 5th set at Wimbledon.  It has all served as a great distraction until the NFL season starts.  More importantly, our fantasy league drafts start in 6-9 weeks for most of us.Here are the first rankings I received from NFL.com this past week.  I haven’t had the chance to pour over them but due note that in the RB category, Ray Rice rose meteorically, Matt Forte is still falling and there are several new names in the top 20 like Ryan Matthews, Shon Greene and Jamal Charles.http://www.nfl.com/fantasy/rankings

Wow, I’m a little sad to see the sudden announcement from my league’s hosting site, webleaguemanager.com (WLM), that they have partnered with Real Time Fantasy Sports (RTFS).  Apparently, RTFS will power all of the league sites previously hosted on WLM.  Although WLM had its shortcomings, my league stayed loyal to the site for the last 7 or 8 years.  At first glance, the RTFS partnership has greatly changed the landscape, production and navigation from WLM.  My first reaction is that I really am NOT digging this change.  RTFS makes it very difficult to see the league summaries on one page and very hard to find what I want to see.  I’ll have to do more evaluation of the site but I’d love to hear from others that were affected by this change.

Another week of mediocrity…the dreaded 8-8 to take my overall record to X-Y-1.  On the bright side, I did go 4-1 on my locks.  For Thanksgiving, I like the home teams but not the Lions so much.  I’m taking GB -10.5 over DET, DAL -13.5 over OAK and DEN +6.5 vs. NYG.

Gosh, it’s hard to believe we are into Week 12 of the season and the Thanksgiving day games already.  The NFL has added a third game to the festivities of late.  I seem to always remember these games as high scoring for some reason.  Looking at these games, I think you have everything you need from a Fantasy perspective for the week.  The Cowboys should run the ball down the throat of Oakland and they are my Survivor pick of the week.  At QB, Aaron Rodgers will dominate defense-less Detroit team, throwing at will to Jennings, Driver and Finley.  Crosby should kick many FGs.  Detroit has to throw early and often so expect Megatron to get his share.  In game 2, I really think Felix and Marion should run all day long.  Heck, Choice might even score late as the Cowboys out this game away early.  Cowboys defense should be the beneficiary of many turnovers.  In the final game, Denver hasn’t stopped a running game in the last 4 weeks.  Expect the Giants to run all night and gut one out.

The run of mediocrity continued last week (7-8) and worse yet I hit hard times with my locks (1-3).  I think what is really bothering me the last few weeks is that I can’t get a Sunday or Monday night game right.  Plus I’ve lost Thursday’s game as well already.  At least there are 16 games this week so I can catch up.  I’m standing at 66-58-1 overall and 15-13 on locks.  I’m in desperate need of a run this week.  Fingers crosses.  As always, my picks are to the left and locks have an *.

*IND +1 @BAL
*DET -3.5 vs. CLE

At this point in the year it’s all about loading up for the stretch drive and the playoffs…Let’s look at 5 hot commodities this week at the RB position to see who has value.  And please don’t go out and pick up Larry Johnson… he’s 2nd string at best.

1. Justin Forsett - I’m no doctor but Julius Jones injuries seem like season enders.  That should set up well for Mr. Forsett to get 15-20 carries per game and maybe 2-3 catches.  Looking at the schedule, it’s hit or miss really; @MIN, @STL, SF, @HOU, TB, @GB, TEN.  I like weeks 12, 14 and 15 to be strong plays for Justin.  I think he’s very worthy of a 3rd RB spot on your roster and spot starter in those weeks.

2. Bernard Scott - Like Mr. Forsett, Mr. Scott is stepping into a role due to an injury.  I think Cedric Benson’s hip flexor seems like a one week problem.  Plus, I’m sure he sees blood in the water with the next 2 games at home against CLE and DET.  If you have Benson on your roster and can take on an insurance policy, I would take Scott for the next 3 weeks worth of good matchups.  I suspect Benson will be back next week after some rest.

3.  Jason Snelling - Who?  I kind of thought the same thing.  With Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood nursing injuries, it appears Snelling is the man this week.  The Giants are without Pierce and Matt Ryan is going through a sophomore slump so expect ATL to run even more and make Snelling a good spot start.  I think Norwood and Turner will be back soon with the season on the line for the Falcons.  There are also good matchups in their future.  If you have the room on your roster, I’d take Snelling as a flyer but don’t expect it to last.

4. Ladell Betts - Another guy that is taking advantage of an injury.  I always thought Betts was under utilized by Washington.  He’s a strong runner and good receiver.  He doesn’t have real strong matchups in the next few weeks but the Redskins will probably stay with the run as Jason Campbell is playing his way out of Washington.  I think Betts is a good RB2 right now and I would pick him up if available.

5. Chris Wells - A lot of people are high on this kid as he shows flashes of brilliance.  I’m not one of those people but I can’t argue with the 4.6 yards per carry versus Hightower’s 3.6 average.   It’s obvious too me in games where you think the Cardinals will have a lead, Beanie is your man.  In games, where the Cardinals will throw a lot, Hightower is needed for his pass blocking ability.  Arizona has a few good matchups left so pickup Beanie if you are daring enough to try to pick his spots of brilliance.  Otherwise, I think you should stay away like me.

Week 11 and I’m betting most of you are still in your survivor leagues with all of those bad teams out there to prey on.  So, this week you have the usual suspects like NE, MIN and NO to take if you can.  If you are in need of something a little deeper, I would definitely take DAL over WAS or JAC or BUF.  If you are up against it you have PIT on the road at KC and my stretch pick of the week…. DET over CLE (it’s all about the timing of the match-ups).

It’s been a raw past several weeks as I’ve hovered around the Mendoza line for sports wagering… the dreaded .500 line.  So far this season, after winning Thursday’s game, I’m standing at 59-50-1 overall and 14-10 on locks.  I’m still above water but I’m reaching for the life jacket after a pair of 6-7 weeks.  Week 10 feels like an easier week.  Maybe it’s because we’re back to 15 games.  As always, my picks are to the left and locks have an *.

All those guys over there at ESPN can tell you it’s a no brainer to start Peterson, Brees, Wayne or Gates each week. I really don’t see any of them showing you when to start a second/third tier guy from your bench over a normal starter. That’s what this weekly post looks to accomplish. I want to give you the best possible matchups to consider versus the guys you auto-start each week.
